Pre-Construction Meeting

No, this isn’t our new house.  It’s the lot where our house will be built.

Yesterday, we had our pre-construction meeting.  We went over all of our design choices, and were given a run-down of the procedures involved with building a house.  They went over all the different stages from clearing the land, to the final walk-through.  They haven’t given us a final completion date, however, because they are still waiting on the plot plan.  Once that comes in (which should be any day now) we will know when our house will be ready.

We are also moving right along with packing our stuff and moving out of our current house.  This weekend, we should be ready to rent a storage unit, and we’ll start moving our stuff into there.  We will be moving everything we own into there with the exception of our beds and a limited amount of clothing.  Yay.  :-)

Well, I spoke with my Pulte sales representative yesterday.  She said that the "final" date on the house is scheduled for sometime between 1/3/08 – 1/9/08.  That means that the final day of work on the house should be on one of those days.  Closing would occur the day after the "final" date, and then we would take possession of the house and move in.  Hopefully there won’t be any construction delays!

Our pre-construction meeting should occur sometime in August.  They have ordered the plans for the house, and they should arrive sometime between Aug. 10-15.  Once they have arrived, they will schedule our pre-construction meeting, and then things will finally start to roll.

In the mean time, we are going to start packing this weekend.  By next week, we should have a storage space lined up, and we’ll start moving our belongings into it.  I sure hope everything goes smoothly!

Laura got a call yesterday from someone at USAA‘s "Mover’s Advantage" program.  They told her that they were notified by Pulte that our closing date would be December 31st.  That was news to us!  The most recent information we had received from Pulte (back when we went in to choose the colors/tile/carpet) was that it would be in the January/February 2008 timeframe.

Well, Laura put a call in to our Pulte representative, but it was her day off.  The woman who spoke to Laura, however, informed her that our close date is estimated to be November 30th!  She said that they think they will have it completed much sooner then anticipated.

This doesn’t make sense to me for a couple of reasons:

  • When we went in to sign the papers, all the way up until now, our rep has been telling us that the latter part of June, early part of July has been one of their busiest ever.  They have gotten more contracts in then normal, which would mean there are more homes to build at one time then normal.
  • There is a lot right down the street from ours.  On the day that we signed the contract, I noticed that they had put up the forms for the foundation on that lot.  It is now one month later, and the only progress made is that the foundation has been poured.  Nothing else has been done.  With all of the rain that we have had this summer, and all of the delays that I’m sure it has caused in construction, how are they going to complete the homes already under construction, and ours in four months?

Well, I guess time will tell.  Hopefully everything will work out the way that it should.

The Blue Devils won 1st place in the DCI Soutwestern Championship in San Antonio, TX this past Saturday night (July 21, 2007). They were awesome! They truly deserved it! My prediction is that they will take 1st place at the World Championship this year.

The Crossmen didn’t do as well as we had hoped. They came in 7th place in the afternoon competition, which I guess would put them 15th for the day. This is their first year being based in San Antonio, TX. We figured that they would be going through some growing pains and adjustments, and we were right. The part that was most disappointing was that since they didn’t advance to the evening session, they left right away for Denton, TX. That meant that we didn’t get to see Laura’s dad like we had hoped.

We did, however, get to visit with Chris Lennox after the show. He came home with us after the show, and we spent the next day with him until about 9:30 PM. They then left for Midland, TX for their next show. All in all, it was a fun day. We sure do miss him, though. It sucks only being able to see him a couple of days a year, but I understand. As gifted as he is with music, there are so many more options available to him elsewhere. San Antonio doesn’t have a lot to offer someone with that kind of talent. Hopefully, it won’t be permanent. We’d love to have him come live full-time in San Antonio eventually. Heck, even Houston or Austin would be better then nothing (Hint Hint if you are reading this Chris). ;-)

The DCI Southwest Championship is here this weekend in San Antonio, TX! We will get to see both Laura’s dad AND brother! Her dad will be here with The Crossmen, and Chris will be here with The Blue Devils. The Blue Devils are doing REALLY well this year. They have placed no lower then 2nd this year, and have placed in 1st place a total of 13 out of 17 times! I can’t wait to see them!

The event will be this Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Alamodome. I’ll try and post some reviews following the performances!

Building a new house!

Well, it’s official!  Laura and I got final approval on a loan for a new house yesterday!  We are going to be building a new Pulte home in the new Alamo Ranch area off of SH-151 and Loop 1604.  It’s a one-floor, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house with a brick exterior.  It’s gonna be awesome!  We are going to go to the home center this afternoon to finalize all of our selections for the tile, carpet, brick and countertops.  Stay posted for more details!

My Grampy

Jimmy Martinez

December 30, 1919 – May 31, 2007

On Thursday, May 31, 2007, one of my heroes passed away. He was my grandfather, Jimmy Martinez, or “Grampy” as we knew him. My Grampy was quite a man.  He was born on a farm in Lytle, TX and was one of nine siblings.  As an adult, he married my grandmother, Angela Martinez (formerly Sanchez).  He had two daughters.  His oldest was my aunt, Virginia Garcia; his youngest was my mother, Elizabeth Ann Ayala.  Each daughter had two children.  In order of age the grandchildren are Richard Garcia, myself, Leticia Cardenas, and my brother Miguel Ayala.

Grampy was a veteran of World War II, where he was discharged after being medically disabled.  This led to his involvement as a member of San Antonio Chapter 25 of the Disabled American Veterans.  Upon discharge from the Army Air Corps, where he had been an aircraft mechanic, he entered civil service at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX.  He also maintained a part-time job working at Penner’s in downtown San Antonio in order to ensure that his two daughters had the funding necessary to obtain college degrees.

Always a hard working man, Grampy was very proud of his yard and his home for as long as anyone can remember.  Gardening was something that he truly enjoyed and he would maintain a variety of vegetation, with the most prominent being his beloved rose bushes.  Most important to him, however, was family.

Grampy did all he could to make sure that his family was cared for and loved.  As a child, Grampy would take my cousins, my brother and I to the park every chance he had.  Anytime we had a day off from school, we would make a day of it.  Shortly after arriving at his house in the morning, Granny would begin packing a lunch for everyone.  Once lunch was ready, we would all pile into Grampy’s car, and away we would go.  Each outing was an adventure.  Our destination was always a surprise.  Whenever we would ask where we were going, his answer was always the same, “Passamaquoddy.”

Once we arrived at our destination, we would spend hours playing outside in the warmth of the sun.  He would sit quietly nearby and watch us play on the jungle gym, or sometimes he would even help us fly a kite.  When it was time to return home, he would tell us it was time to go.  Once again we’d ask him where our destination was, and his answer to that question as well was always the same, “To the best place on Earth, 1454 West Malone.”

Grampy taught me a lot of things that have shaped me as a person, a father, and a human being.  He taught me at a young age that my father was not “mean” because he grounded me, but rather that he grounded me because of his love for me.  He taught me that hard work was not a bad thing, or a punishment, but rather a means to a heightened sense of satisfaction and pride once the work was complete.  He taught me that patience is your most important tool when dealing with someone less knowledgeable than you through his ability to never lose his patience with his grand kids while we were learning right from wrong.  He taught me to always treat others with respect, and to treat them how YOU would want to be treated, not necessarily how they deserved to be treated.  He taught me how to be giving, and instilled in me a desire to help people in any way that I can.  His most important lesson by far was that family matters.  Family is important. If you devote yourself to your family, your family will devote itself to you.  The standing-room-only crowd at his Rosary was a testament to that.

I will miss my Grampy, but I will never forget him.  He is now, and will forever, be a part of me and who I am.  I, along with my cousins and our parents, are his legacy.  Through our actions in this world, my Grampy will continue to live.

I got back from a trip to Philly on Tuesday.  Laura and I went up there for a bridal shower that her family threw for her.  We had a great time!  I got to play in some snow with Laura’s cousin Sam!  It was the first time in 22 years that I’ve seen snow.

Snow!

Here is a shot of my feet to prove that I was in the snow!

While we were there, we went to the King of Prussia Mall.  It was HUGE!  There was one thing that caught my eye, however.  While walking through Macy’s looking for some gloves, I spotted an iPod vending machine in the men’s department!

All in all, we had fun.  Even got to have an authentic Cheesesteak from Geno’s Steaks.  It blew away every single other Cheesesteak I have ever had.  Hands down. While I was there, I was also introduced to Wawa, a regional convenience store.  It was AWESOME!  They had some outstanding hot dogs, and I would venture to say that I liked their coffee better then Starbuck’s.Well, that’s it from me for now! We are now less then two months from the wedding!  Things are starting to pick up!  :-)

Home!

Well, we made it home without much excitement. Chris’s corp won 2nd place in the finals. He was on cloud nine, and he deserved it! He and the others in his corps worked really hard. We saw them practicing in the triple-digit heat here in south Texas back in July.

We only got to visit with him for a few hours after the competition. We had to leave for Chicago at 7AM on Sunday to make our flight home. I wish we could’ve spent more time with him. We won’t see him again until Christmas.

My Chris started school today. Day 1 of the 8th grade. He’s the big man on campus this year. I hope he enjoys it while he can. A year from now he’ll be a little fish in a MUCH bigger pond.

DCI Semi-finals

We are now in Madison, WI at Camp Randall Stadium. The temperature is a cool and breezy 70 degrees. It feels awesome!

We spent the majority of the day in Chicago. We went to the skydeck of the Sears Tower and saw the awesome view, then had some delicious stuffed pizza. After our 2PM lunch, I paid $26 to leave the parking garage after 3 hours! Oh yeah! And we saw a poor old lady fall and bust her head open in a souvenier shop. Her daughters were already talking lawsuit!

Well, its time for me to get back to the competition. Chris’s corps is almost on!
